Introduction to Pottery Wheel allows students to learn about the various steps in the pottery making process. Students will not create a finished piece but will have practiced the techniques for future pottery wheel classes.

We’ll touch on:

· How ceramics, pottery, sculpture and hand-building are related and the different tools used for each.

· Different clay types.

· The steps of creating pots using the wheel including form, trimming, firing and finishing a piece.

· How to wedge clay.

· Practical wheel exercises focused on centering and form building, opening and pulling walls.

Pottery Wheel Basics class is a 6 session class that allows students to learn about the various steps in the pottery making process. Students often create 5 - 6 finished pieces by the end of the 6th session and will have practiced the techniques for future pottery wheel classes.

Class 1:

· Discuss how ceramics, pottery, sculpture and hand-building are related and the different tools used for each.

· Different clay types.

· The steps of creating pots using the wheel including form, trimming, firing and finishing a piece.

· How to wedge clay.

· Practical wheel exercises focused on throwing on the wheel including centering and form building, opening and pulling walls.

Class 2 - 4:

· Continuation of throwing on the wheel.

· Students will continue to throw with the intent of having 5- 6 pieces to take to the next steps.

Class 5:

· Trimming, altering form.

· Students will learn various trim techniques using a variety of tools.

- Pots will dry and get ready for bisque firing or if already fired, continue to glazing steps.

Class 6:

· Glazing and finishing pots.

· Students will learn various glazing techniques and finish the pieces that are ready.

- Pots will be fired to finish and ready for pick up during store hours.

Course includes: use of studio tools, 15 lbs of clay, use of glazes, bisque and glaze firing in our electric kilns.

In this student driven class, you help shape the direction of your learning- whether that means throwing larger forms, experimenting with complex shapes, or mastering new surface details. Expect to craft 3 to 6 finished pieces as you take your pots to the next level!

Class Breakdown:

Weeks 1-4: Dedicated wheel time! Focus on scaling up, refining shapes, and experimenting with new throwing techniques.

Week 5: Finalizing pre-bisque work, precision trimming, and experimenting with surface design.

Week 6: Final glazing, surface treatment, and preparing your pieces for the ultimate firing.

Course includes:

• 25 lbs of clay

• Access to studio tools

• Selection of studio glazes

• Bisque and glaze firings in our electric kilns

Prerequisites: Must be comfortable wedging, centering, pulling, shaping, and trimming on the wheel independently.
